The Benefits of Soft Water for Skin and Hair

Soft water is becoming a popular choice for both homes and businesses as its many benefits are discovered and shared. With a simple installation, a water softener can improve the quality of cooking, drinking, bathing, and even cleaning. In addition to a number of other health benefits, soft water also offers the opportunity for soft skin and hair.

Glowing Skin with Water Softener

As hard water is much less effective in mixing with soap, shampoo, and other products, it is more difficult to work into an acceptable lather. this means that more product is necessary and soap is less effective at cleaning skin. This also creates a sticky residue that lingers on skin and clogs your pores. A water softener removes the minerals that prevent hard water from combining with soap and leads to softer, cleaner skin with a visible improvement.

Hard water can also dry skin out, leading to itchiness and other issues. Those suffering from eczema and other skin conditions can especially benefit from soft water, as it can reduce swelling, inflammation, and itchiness. Research has indicated that hard water is an exacerbation for eczema, which affect ups to 11% of the population, while soft water can alleviate its symptoms.

Soft Water Gives You Silky Hair

The problematic minerals found in hard water also cause the cuticles of hair to stand up and creates a rough feeling. It can also trap bacteria in the hair and contain large amounts of lime, chalk, and other harsh minerals. Your hair’s natural oils are also stripped away with hard water, while soft water leaves these for a softer texture and shine.

The hair and skin of an entire household can benefit from softened water as it promotes healthy oils on the skin and hair while reducing the amount of products used. Families with a water softening system have consistently reported a noticeable difference in the condition of their hair and skin. 1. I had no idea that having a water softener could be so beneficial for my skin! In your post, you mentioned that hard water can block pores by mixing with soap and shampoo to create a sticky residue that’s hard to wash off. Taking care of my skin is one of the most important things for me right now, so I’m going to look into having a water softener installed in my home as soon as possible. I’m sure that the soft water will help keep my skin clear and healthy! Thank you for the information!

  2. I grew up with soft water in my house. I never realized how much I appreciated a water softener until I didn’t have one! I like how you said hard water is “much less effective in mixing with soap, shampoo, and other products [and] is more difficult to work into an acceptable lather.” I much prefer showering with soft water because of this reason. I am hoping to get a water softener for my new home soon. Thanks for posting!

  3. I’ve noticed this chalky feeling I get whenever I get a shower, and now I realize it’s because I don’t have water softener. I didn’t know that something so simple could get rid of the uncomfortable feeling, along with helping you get clean easier. I think that getting water softeners is a good investment for your health and appearance. Thanks for sharing!

  7. We recently moved to a home that has very hard water. My face has been breaking out in the strangest, eczema-like patches and the rest of my skin is considerably drier than usual. We just moved to a neighboring town, so I know it’s not climate or anything. It looks like I was correct in my suspicion that it is the hard water, and now we WILL have to get a softener! I don’t want any more dry, scaly, red patches on my face and dirty feeling hair and dry skin.

  8. I think it would be smart to get a water softener because hard water can be bad for your skin. I have really flaky skin and because of that, my scalp is also really bad. I think by getting a water softener, I could get my scalp to not be so flaky and itchy.

  9. Thanks for the post. I have noticed a huge difference between water that does not go through a water conditioning system vs one that does. I can notice a huge difference and like the feel of my hair and skin when using a water softener. I think it is also really beneficial for your appliances, and pipes as well to help keep hard water form building up.

  14. I learned a lot about softened water by reading this article. I really like how you said that “The hair and skin of an entire household can benefit from softened water as it promotes healthy oils on the skin and hair while reducing the amount of products used.” I have never used water softeners before but I can imagine how helpful one can be when it comes to taking care of maintaining your hair.

  15. I really need to have a water softener just because the water I use now really irritates my skin. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I haven’t had itchy dry skin. It really affects my scalp.

  17. I have heard and read time and time again that the water coming out of your taps is neither good for you hair or your skin. I lived in an apartment that had the absolute worst water and always left my hair feeling frizzy and brittle. My skin was always dry as well. I finally discovered it was the water doing it to me because whenever I went home to visit parents or went on vacation, my hair and skin always felt better. Since then I have realized the need for water softener!

  18. I thought it was interesting that soft water can give you silky hair. Whenever I have hard water, I end up feeling slimy and gross even after washing with soap. I will have to be sure to check my water softener to see if it needs more salt or not.

  19. I am currently living in student housing and the water here is horrible! I have never lived in a place with water this bad. It not only tastes bad but it has had a huge impact on my hair and skin! That is not exaggerating either. Every time I get out of the shower, my hair feels absolutely horrible, even with expensive shampoos and conditioners that work fine other places. And, my skin has been the worst it has ever been. I owe it all, unfortunately, to the water and how there is no sort of water softener at all!

  20. I love the way my skin feels with water softener. I lived in an apartment for awhile that didn’t have one and my skin was the worst it has ever been! That is not even an exaggeration. My skin has never had too many problems, but without a water softener I can totally see a difference in the health of my skin!

  21. I have a son that suffers from eczema, he gets it on his face and chest. I feel so sorry for him because I know it bothers him. I didn’t realize that hard water could be making it worse.

  23. My parents have been talking about having a water softener installed for a very long time. It was cool to learn that soft water can ensure that your hair’s natural oils are not stripped when you are taking a shower. I can imagine how helpful a water softener can be when it comes to ensuring that your hair and skin is taken care of properly when showering.

  24. I didn’t realize that soft water is much more effective in mixing with soap, shampoo, and other products. I don’t like having dry skin, so I bet by getting a water softener, I can cut down on the amount of lotion I use since I won’t have to worry about dry skin anymore. Thanks for this helpful information!
